So I took out my spark plugs after my dad said they were clean but they were insanely dirty. I should of got a picture of it. The sparks had what looked like gravel or sand in the threads on cylinder 1. The sparks were all black. MR2 started up better but I did not drive it It started raining. Hopefully this fixes my issue with the hesitation when shes hot. Pic is not mine lol.

If they were really filthy it ABSOLUTELY can make a difference.
On my old supercharged car they fouled out in 10k, and I could tell because the car would develop a miss/hesitation at mid RPM.

Yeah rx8’s do this too, just constant fouling. The stock ignition system was just good enough, but whenever any component wasn’t in pristine order the plugs would foul. Eventually put Tahoe coils in and it stopped happening. Noticeable improvement driving around too.

Talked to a guy at the gas station with an 88 the other day, he has three but ones a donor and not sure what year his other one is. They sound like really fun cars, glad your up and running. He runs an msd ignition it’s something I would look into it’s a much stronger spark.

A pertronix module for your distributor and an msd 6 al with a rev limiter is only about 350. It’ll give you a pretty solid ignition for the money and it’s an easy upgrade. Less maintenance, and a bit of power and response. Way easier on the battery and alternator, older cars charging systems are pretty weak if you are running aftermarket stereos and constantly have your gadgets charging.

I’d do the pertronix first. Points are a pain and your condenser has probably never been changed so it’ll knock two problems out in one go since it eliminates the need for both. Research the msd, mounting in a mid engine isn’t going to be hard or expensive but will take some planning. If you plan on adding power down the line wait till you decide how you will do it, because if you go turbo or supercharged there is a programmable one that’ll serve you better.
